Writing your own website copy is not for the faint of heart, but with my top three tips to improve your website copy, you’ll easily be able to engage your visitors. As a copywriter, I’ve written copy for dozens of websites, and there are a few elements I include on every website no matter what the industry, product, or service.
Visitors to your website will only spend an average of 52 seconds on each page of your site. So it’s crucial that you have the essential pieces of content that will grab their attention and build the link know and trust factor.
Research has shown that 79% of people only scan any new page they come across, and only 16% read word for word. This is why attention-grabbing headers are critical if you want to grab someone’s attention. In the header, you want to foster an emotional connection while using keywords to improve your SEO ranking. Then follow it up with a meaningful subheading.
Here are a few additional tips for sharing needed information:
Including a bio on every page has several benefits, the biggest one being that it ensures you have at least one opportunity to introduce yourself. While your About Page should have the longest and most comprehensive bio, a shorter bio on additional pages works beautifully for a quick introduction.
With each bio, add something new about yourself and tailor it to the service, product, or experience you are sharing on the site. Never copy and paste your bio from one page to another; it can negatively affect your SEO.
If you are not the face of your brand or your business, you should still have a little bio about the company that shares your culture, values, growth story, and unique approach to your industry.
Each page of your website should have a clear narrative arc that takes your audience on a journey. With each page, you want to ensure you identify with their problem, provide them with a solution, share why your product is the best solution, and then provide them with any additional information they need to make a decision.
Just like each book you read creates a narrative arc that results in the reader’s transformation, each page of your website should convey a transformation. You want to share with the audience how they will feel and/ or the results they will feel once they have purchased your product or experienced your service. Paint the picture vividly, and when possible, use stats to back it up.
